New York Bill Would Extend Advertising Rules to Online Sportsbooks

A lawmaker in New York has introduced a new bill with the aim of extending existing rules for retail sports betting advertising to include online sportsbooks. Assemblyman Clyde Vanel proposed Bill A10658 which would update state law.

As per the current rules for retail operations, facilities have to clearly state any conditions associated with promotions and can not miselad gamblers. The ads also cannot showcase people under 21 years old, and the name of the facility and phone number for a problem gambling helpline must feature.

Assemblyman Vanel is a long-time advocate for player protection measures. His latest bill currently sits with the Racing and Wagering Committee. If the legislation gets full approval, it will come into effect 90 days after the Governor signs the bill.

Lawmakers in New York want to make sure that operators are not misleading their customers in what is now the country’s biggest betting market. Other advertising restrictions that came into place over the past year in New York included the banning of certain phrases such as “free of risk,” “risk-free,” and “free.”
