Collect and compete with players

Fantasy soccer operator Sorare has partnered with 18 national teams ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in Qatar on November 20.

The free-to-play game is called “Sorare: Global Cup ‘22,” although the contracts with the teams will run beyond the end of the once-every-four-years competition. Top countries such as Argentina, Spain, and Germany will be featured in the game.

Players will be able to collect digital trading cards and showcase their favorite players, sticking with the NFT-centered theme of Sorare’s company. Teams will consist of eight players and can be used to earn rewards throughout the World Cup all the way until the final match.

Sorare targeted the World Cup

The unveiling of Sorare’s newest project was strategically planned to coincide with the 2022 FIFA World Cup which, for the first time in modern history, will be right in the middle of most leagues’ calendars instead of during the summer.

“The Sorare: Global Cup ‘22 mirrors one of the biggest moments in sports; the most iconic, celebrated and watched international sports tournament on the planet which has played host to some of football’s most legendary matches, players and champions, not least England ‘66 and France ‘98 and ’18,” said Sorare co-founder and CEO Nicolas Julia.

a chance for all football fans to put their football knowledge to the test”

“At Sorare, we are building the next sports entertainment giant by giving fans new ways to enjoy the sports they love and connect with their favorite stars,” he continued. “Launching Sorare: Global Cup ‘22 is a big step in that mission. Our new game is a chance for all football fans to put their football knowledge to the test, and the winners will enjoy some truly once-in-a-lifetime prizes.”

Since the events on the pitch could affect the prizes doled out on the app, users will need to pick their players and lineups strategically. Brazil is the current odds-on favorite to win its first World Cup since 2002 at +450, while Lionel Messi’s Argentina is second at +550. An injury-riddled France team that had previously been second has moved down to third at +600.

Company developments

Sorare launched in 2019 and has already forged a strong position in the world of digital gaming and NFTs. It is currently serving as the NFT provider and fantasy soccer partner of reigning Italian league champions AC Milan.

“We’re building a gaming experience fueled by passion where fans can connect with football and a global community,” Sorare head of business development Michael Meltzer said after the deal was announced.

The English Premier League also underwent talks with Sorare as recently as a couple of weeks ago. The focus of the meetings was on developing digital assets for players across the league, which is widely regarded as the best and most competitive in the world.

However, Sorare has been under investigation by the UK Gambling Commission to determine whether or not they would need to secure licensing for what could be construed as gambling activities. The UKGC is still looking into the matter; progress has not been helped by the constant turnover at the top level, with Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, and Rishi Sunak all serving as Prime Minister within the past half-year.
